Ashby C. Sorensen has focused exclusively on criminal defense since opening his practice in 2009. Before opening his own practice, he spent more than five years at the Fresno County Public Defender's Office, where he defended serious felony cases in trial court.
That background shapes how the firm works today. Public defender trial practice means volume, pressure, and constant contact with the realities of how cases are investigated, charged, and litigated — including what actually holds up when evidence is examined closely.
He earned his B.A. in Communication from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his law degree from California Western School of Law in San Diego.
How Ashby approaches representation
Clients are usually encountering the criminal justice system for the first time, under stress, with incomplete information. A significant part of the job is simply explaining clearly what is happening, what the next step is, and what the realistic considerations are — without inflating expectations or minimizing risk.
The other part is the work itself: obtaining the discovery, reading it closely, investigating what the reports leave out, identifying the legal issues, and preparing the case rather than waiting to see what happens.
